After Amal’s first successful summer camp for deaf children in 2024, we were thrilled to have the second edition in July 2026. 12 children from Koutoubia Deaf Association, along with 6 chaperones, went on an exciting journey to the north of Morocco, visiting the cities of Chefchaouen, Tetouan and Tangier. They stayed at Association Hanane for 11 nights (a well-established Tetouan non-profit that supports children and young people with disabilities) where our hosts kindly offered a 30% discount on accommodation and gave the children free use of the pool and sports grounds throughout their stay.

For five of the children, this was the first time going to the sea. Those who had been on the first summer camp eagerly told them about it on the way. They went to five different beaches where they swam in the gentle Mediterranean waters and played in the sand for hours. One camper filled her whole backpack up with seashells to use for crafts once she got home.

In addition to swimming, they explored the old medina of Tetouan, visited the American Legation Museum in Tangier, made their own pieces at a pottery workshop, and played football, volleyball, tennis and padel. Teacher Hafsa also surprised the children with puzzles that she had made beforehand: each child discovered a picture of themselves once the puzzle was complete.

Camp life also meant pitching in and becoming more responsible: making their bed, setting the tables and even washing their own clothes. Wherever they went, the children were met with the kindness of strangers and were treated on several occasions to ice cream, treats, and little souvenirs. Camp gave these children a summer full of firsts that they will remember for a long time.
