After each club meeting our leaders facilitate, they send me a report sharing the discussion topics and comments made by the children. I love reading these reports because they highlight the wonderful changes the clubs are making in the lives of the participants. Here is an example from a report on the topic of Self-Talk.

The session began with a discussion on self-talk, where the girls explored the power of the words they say to themselves every day. It quickly became clear that although a few girls believed in themselves and spoke positively about their abilities, the majority admitted that they often entertained negative thoughts about themselves. Many confessed that they struggled with self-confidence because of comments made by family members, friends, or society.

One of the most touching moments came when Arupe courageously shared her story. She quietly said that she did not think she was beautiful anymore and that it no longer bothered her. She went on to explain that her mother often tells her she is too stubborn to ever succeed in life, while her aunt believes she will eventually drop out of school because of drug abuse or pregnancy. Sadly, Arupe admitted that she had started believing these hurtful words herself.

I asked the rest of the girls whether they thought the statements made about Arupe were true. The entire class strongly disagreed. I then invited Arupe to stand in front of the class, and together we began pointing out her beautiful features, unique qualities, and strengths. At first, she was shy and hesitant, but as the compliments continued and the girls enthusiastically hyped her up, her confidence slowly blossomed. Before long, she was striking playful diva poses and showing off a little attitude, sending the whole class into uncontrollable laughter. It was a beautiful reminder of how powerful encouragement and positive words can be in rebuilding someone’s confidence.
