Debundscha, a coastal village in SW Cameroon, is an area that experienced a HUGE influx of IDPs because it was one area in the far west that was untouched by rebels so schools were still operating. But the school, which was run by community members at that time, was overwhelmed. With only four dilapidated rooms for over 400 children, no government teachers, no textbooks… children had to study outside under the trees – despite having the highest rainfall in the world – over 400” per year! In 2021, along with a grant from SHF, we funded the construction of two additional classrooms and two pit toilets for the school. We also funded training for the volunteer teachers and supplied them with school books. We completed the project in 2022, and the students starting grade 3 at that time recently graduated from the 6th grade. We therefore found this update from Etang heart-warming!
We are delighted to announce that 100% of the registered 2025–2026 Class 6 pupils of Debundscha Primary School successfully passed their examinations! [NOTE: poor schools in Cameroon typically have only 40%-50% pass rates on the 6th grade national exams.] This outstanding achievement reflects the determination of the pupils, the dedication of their teachers, and the unwavering support of partners who believe in quality education. Since SHF and Global Pearls Inc. generously funded [this project], Debundscha Primary School has continued to record remarkable academic success year after year. Their investment has provided children with a safer, more conducive learning environment, helping them reach their full potential. Thank you for believing in the power of education. Together, we are building hope, one child at a time.
