Schools are located among all the local communities of the JONG project area through the 5th grade, but to attend higher levels of education children must travel much longer distances. Low caste girls who travel by foot to more distant schools are frequently the victims of sexual assault. As a result, the girls in the JONG project area previously did not continue past the 5th grade. But then Martin, the project director in India, came up with a very low-tech solution – bicycles.

Bicycles keep girls safe, and on my last visit to the JONG villages oi Southern India, this was their most passionate plea – bicycles so their girls could continue school without fear.
